The system’s concept of interdependence mirrors that of Hobbes’ Leviathan and Thomas More’s Utopia. The lack of labor from one can cause a rippling effect upon the whole system. The fruits of the labor of one produce the necessity of labor from another. Our authors are absolutely right in claiming that, “…the division of labor can cloud peoples’ perceptions of the interdependent nature of their work.” (p107) It may seem like production in an organization is independent until signatures of approval are required, the next step requires the input of a specialty department, etc.
